THE GOOD ATHEIST
Paraphrased By Michael Hawkinson

One bright morning a Child Protective Service judge started his journey to a small rural town when he had car trouble. Pulling over to the side of the road he opened the hood to see if he could figure out the problem. Just then a car pulled over and two men got out and the judge was glad to have someone to help him. Instead of helping him, they robbed him, beat him and left him for dead.

Shortly afterwards, a protestant minister drove by and saw the person laying by his car but was in too much of a hurry to get to the bible study to stop and thought, "Someone else will be by soon. I don't want to be late since I am the teacher." The minister sped on by.

It was getting late in the morning and another car approached. The driver was a Buddhist who upon spotting the man laying by the car on the side of the road thought, "That man must have had bad karma! I would help him but it would only make his suffering worse in the next life." So the man was left laying by the roadside.

The sun was getting hot and still the man had not moved when an old beat up pick up truck appeared in the distance. The driver, an atheist, slowed down as he saw the stranded car. When the driver saw the bloodied man laying by the car he quickly pulled over and jumped out to see if there was anything he could do. Finding the judge unconscious, the atheist carried the man to his pickup and towing the judge's car behind... the man took the judge to a nearby hospital. The atheist not knowing if the unconscious man had insurance, gladly signed to be the responsible party for any bills. "Take care of this man" he said, "and I will be back to see if there is anything else I can do to help." (A Parable of A Good Samaritan See: Luke 10:25-37)

Matthew 5:44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

Luke 6:35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great and you will be sons of the Most High, because He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.

Romans 12:20 On the contrary, if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing so you will heap burning coals upon his head.

I Thessalonians 5:15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.

Examples of God’s people doing good to those who have done evil: Joseph, Genesis 45:15; Moses Numbers 12:13; David, I Samuel 24:17 and 26:11; Elisha, 2 Kings 6:22; Jesus, Luke 22:51 & 23:34; Stephen, Acts 7:60; The Apostles, I Corinthians 4:9-13
