THE MERCHANT, THE BOY AND THE DONKEY Traditional Parable One day a man, a boy and their donkey went to the market a fair distance from their home. After a long, tiring day they packed up their wares (they hadn't sold many) and headed home. After a short distance the old man was berated by a bystander for making a boy walk when he had a donkey the boy could ride. Feeling ashamed, the old man put the boy on the donkey but after awhile people kept yelling out how can you make an old man walk, he should be riding the donkey. The boy felt terrible, so he asked his father to ride the and the boy led the way. It was getting late with all the delays but another group of people saw the trio and complained loudly of the horrible treatment of the donkey and asked them how they could be so cruel as to make the donkey carry the wares and the old man. Afraid that they would be accosted, the man and his son divided up the wares and carried them to appease the crowd. Finally, making it close to home their neighbors openly laughed and joked at them for carrying all the wares when they had a donkey to use. The man & the boy barely had time to eat and sleep that day before they had to head back to the marketplace. Moral of the story: You can always find someone to tell you that you are doing something the wrong way. Romans 14: (10) You, then, why do you judge your brother?
